How I Got Here
Remember social studies class in fourth or maybe fifth grade? Remember learning that the founding principle of the United States—as Abraham Lincoln so powerfully put it—was to have a government of the people, by the people, for the people? That America is a nation of immigrants, a melting pot, a salad bowl? That the Statue of Liberty stands as a symbol of welcome, of freedom, of hope? That people from all over the world came here chasing the dream of a better life?
I remember. And I can’t help but wonder: what happened to all of that?
As a child, that was the America I was proud to live in. As I got older and began to understand that the real world is more complicated than those glossy textbook versions, I still held onto a sense of pride—not because we were perfect, but because we were trying. We owned up to our past mistakes. We aspired to do better. I’ve watched our country stumble along that path, but never abandon it.
Until recently.
Over the past five months, it has become painfully clear that the Trump administration has no interest in continuing that journey. This administration seems to want an American king. It no longer sees this country as a proud nation of immigrants, united by our shared hopes for freedom and dignity. Instead, it works actively to undermine the democratic ideals we were taught to cherish—challenging the separation of powers, flouting the right to due process, detaining and deporting without fair trials. It’s been horrifying to witness such profoundly un-American behavior coming from the very top.
But there is hope.
Another thing I learned in school was the power of the people. The power of protest. The power of collective action. Our Constitution begins with “We the People,” and that isn’t just a phrase—it’s a charge. When the Constitution is under attack from executive overreach, it is our responsibility to stand up and defend it.
That’s why I knew I had to act. I had to get involved. And it had to be in the spirit of those early civic lessons. That’s what brought me to the 50501 Movement.
The 50501 Movement is truly of the people, by the people, for the people. No political parties, no corporate donors, no career politicians—just us. Everyday Americans, organizing and acting together to protect the country we believe in.
And there are so many ways to help. You can attend peaceful protests. Call your representatives. Spend your money wisely and ethically. Boost the movement online. Talk to your family and friends. Spread awareness. Get people involved. The list goes on.
Not sure exactly where to plug in? That’s okay. Fill out the volunteer form. Let the movement know what you’re interested in, what skills you bring to the table. There will definitely be a way for you to contribute.
Because here’s the truth: we all need to do something. Every voice matters. Every action counts. This is our moment to stand together and say—as we did 250 years ago—No Kings.
