Non-Protest Actions Bingo
The below bingo card contains a list of actions you can take (other than protesting) to help further the cause. If you get a bingo (or heck, a blackout), tag us on social media to let us know!
1. Rather like a yard sign or flag in support of marginalized groups, bumper stickers can indicate your political leanings (and to a lesser extent, the leanings of your neighborhood/workplace). The ACLU, Amnesty International, and many other organizations have several bumper stickers to choose from. As an added bonus, purchasing something from a charitable org usually funds their work as well!

Cultivating Resistance: How Denver Urban Gardens & Volunteers Are Building a Stronger, Healthier Denver
“Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall one after the other unless each is defended from the beginning.”
—Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny
In times of political division, disinformation, and rising authoritarian threats, it can feel like the most urgent work happens at ballot boxes or in protests. But resistance also grows quietly. When we show up for local institutions, we aren’t just standing against the current administration, we are standing up for a future we believe in. We’re cultivating community, investing in civic trust, and reinforcing the small, decentralized structures that help democracies endure.
This is just the beginning. The local 50501 movement (50501 CO) is committed to making events like this a regular part of how we show up for our community. We believe that the most impactful work often happens in the margins—led by small organizations already doing the hard, thankless labor of addressing Denver’s toughest challenges.
In the months ahead, we’ll be partnering with grassroots groups focused on food justice, housing, harm reduction, and community health. Our aim is to support these efforts with volunteers, visibility, and hands-on help.
If you’re looking for a way to get involved in meaningful, local change—keep an eye on this space. 50501 CO is just getting started!
What is DUG All About?
Two weeks ago, our group volunteered with Denver Urban Gardens (DUG), and the experience was a powerful reminder: ordinary people, working side by side, can shape a more just and resilient future by supporting the work already being done in our own neighborhoods.
Founded in 1985, DUG helps communities grow food, build relationships, and take ownership of the land they share. In neighborhoods where resources are scarce and trust in institutions is low, DUG gardens offer tangible solutions and places to gather with dignity and purpose.
A network of 200+ community gardens and food forests across the Denver metro area
Over 627,000 pounds of food grown annually, stewarded by neighbors
Educational programs, composting workshops, youth engagement, and climate resilience efforts
Why This Work Matters
In a climate where national politics often feel out of reach, local action is essential. Community gardens don’t just feed people—they connect them, teach skills, and model the kind of democratic participation we’re losing elsewhere.
Denver Urban Gardens represents one of those “small d” democratic institutions Snyder urges us to support:
Nonpartisan
Community-powered
Focused on tangible good
Resilient in the face of political neglect
The food is important. But so is the feeling that we belong to each other—and to something bigger than ourselves.
Our Volunteer Day: Growing More Than Food
Our recent workday was hands-on, dirty, and filled with laughter. Here's what we accomplished:
Built new garden beds to expand local food access
Planted seedlings that will be harvested by neighborhood families
Cleared debris and composted waste to restore soil health and prep for summer growth
Met neighbors, swapped stories, and shared snacks under the sun
This was more than volunteerism—it was solidarity. We came together not only to grow food but to reinforce the community-level infrastructure that helps people stay rooted during uncertain times.
What’s Next & How You Can Help
We’re proud to support an organization that is grounded—literally—in community values and shared responsibility. By showing up in the soil, we also show up for democracy. This isn’t just gardening. It’s institution-building, one shovel at a time.
Keep supporting organizations like DUG by participating in a way that is right for you:
Volunteer: Join DUG for weekly workdays (Wednesday or Friday, 9am–12pm)
Sign up for SPOT: Their Seasonal Project Outreach Team is perfect for folks with flexible time and big hearts
Donate: Help DUG continue providing seeds, soil, and support to communities across Denver
Attend a workshop: Learn to compost, care for pollinators, or teach kids about gardening
