Corruption
The struggle we find ourselves in isn’t a new one. In many ways, US history could be told solely from the perspective of the fundamental disagreement that Trump and his cabinet have pushed to the fore.
Are we the ‘give me liberty or give me death’ country? Are we the huddled masses yearning to be free? Do we believe in the ideals of liberty and justice for all, as our politicians so frequently claim?
Or are we the freedom-for-some country? The ‘everything for sale’ country? Morals, sympathy, common human decency – everything must go in our blockbuster, White House lawn sale! Are we the country to put price tags on laws and regulations and clean air, so that corporations can buy them out from under us?
Two futures spread out before us. On the first path, we successfully make a stand for human rights, decency, and people over profit. While I’m not naïve enough to claim this path leads to utopia, I believe there are certain benefits that would still be within our grasp. We can renew the EPA and curb the rights of billionaires to shove polluting data centers down our throats. Rewrite the immigration laws and enact Medicare-for-all.
On the other path lies tyranny and kleptocracy. A form of government to rival the worst the world has to offer, which only makes its presence known in our lives in order to assist the wealthy as they pick our pockets and benefit from our labor.
Donald Trump has proven himself the most corrupt, bribe-able president we’ve ever had. His $1.8 billion settlement with himself is an act we would have thought unconscionable just a few years ago. Likewise, his meme coin and acceptance of a private jet.
Congress and the Supreme Court have refused to stand in his way. In fact, they’re effectively paving the road to make his brazen theft easier. Don’t forget, the $1.8 billion settlement was paired with an agreement that the IRS will be blocked from reviewing any past tax filings by Trump.
This is why we need to find new, better ways of making ourselves felt. I know many of us are hoping for the mid-terms to right this ship, and I certainly hope that as well. At the same time, we should be prepared. If this is a fight for the future of our nation, we can’t expect victory to come easy.
