Executive Overreach: Choose Your own Adventure
Page 1
A large federal operation rolls into a city like it’s arriving to “restore order.” Local officials object. People gather. Some are protesting. Some are watching. Some are filming. Some are just trying to get home without getting caught in the middle of somebody else’s theater.
A spokesperson assures everyone this is routine and under control.
You recognize this line. It’s the one said right before things get weird.
If you want to treat this like normal politics and keep scrolling, turn to Page 6.
If you want to show up because you’re angry and you want them to feel it, turn to Page 12.
If you want to show up like you’re part of a crew, turn to Page 18.
Page 6
You stay home. You tell yourself you’ll catch up later, when it’s clearer what’s happening.
“Later” arrives as a video clip with no context and a headline that starts with the word CLASHES.
Your group chat becomes a mix of despair, arguing, and “I don’t even know what’s true anymore.”
Congratulations: you have reached Fog Mode.
Fog Mode is where overreach gets upgraded while everyone’s debating the footage.
THE END (for today). Turn back to Page 1 and pick a move that creates less fog.
Page 12
You show up mad. You’re not wrong to be mad. You’re human.
The crowd is loud. The line is tense. Someone shouts something that feels like a dare. Someone else tries to be the main character. Somebody throws something dumb. Somebody shoves. Somebody steps forward when they should step back.
A camera finds the worst ten seconds of the entire night. It always does.
If you want to keep pushing, turn to Page 26.
If you want to pull your people back and leave, turn to Page 30.
Page 18
You show up like you’re part of a crew.
You came with someone. You set a meet-up spot. You’re hydrated like an adult. You know where the exits are. You’re paying attention to what’s happening around you, not just what you wish was happening.
You’re not there to “win.” You’re there to deny the script.
You notice three types of people:
Folks who are sincerely angry and scared.
Folks who are trying to keep things calm.
Folks who really, really want a fire.
You decide, very deliberately, not to help category three.
If you want to stay and document, turn to Page 22.
If you want to leave early and help from outside the scene, turn to Page 24.
Page 22
You document. Calmly. Boringly. Like a nerd with a tricorder.
You film what happens before the incident, which is the part that always disappears.
You keep your distance. You don’t narrate like you’re auditioning for cable news. You capture faces of authority, badge numbers if visible, and the moment the rules change.
Later, when the official story arrives pre-polished, you already know which parts don’t match.
You have unlocked: Receipts.
THE END (for now). Turn to Page 36.
Page 24
You leave early. Not because you’re scared. Because you understand timing.
You donate to bail funds. You call local officials. You help organize rides. You text friends who are there and say the unglamorous thing: “If it shifts, don’t stay to prove a point.”
You have unlocked: Support Roles That Don’t Become Footage.
THE END (for now). Turn to Page 36.
Page 26
The crowd surges. The line answers. Somebody gets hurt. Somebody gets arrested. Somebody panics.
The story is no longer about why people are there.
It becomes about control. It becomes about restoring order. It becomes about how “these people” can’t be trusted with public space.
You can practically hear a lawyer somewhere flipping to the chapter titled EXTRAORDINARY AUTHORITIES.
You have unlocked: The Pretext.
THE END. Turn to Page 36 if you want to keep the country out of this ending.
Page 30
You pull back. You leave. You do the thing nobody wants to do in the moment because it feels like surrender.
It isn’t surrender. It’s refusing to be used.
You deny them the “violent mob” frame. You deny them the clean clip. You deny them the excuse.
You have unlocked: Discipline.
THE END (for now). Turn to Page 36.
Page 36
Here’s the twist ending: this isn’t a book.
You don’t control the whole plot. You can’t stop power from trying to escalate. You can’t prevent every provocateur, every hothead, every bad decision.
But you can control whether you become the moment they point at when they say, “See? We had no choice.”
So here’s the actual “cheat code” list. Not inspirational. Not poetic. Just useful:
Don’t go alone. The lone-wolf hero fantasy is how people get isolated and harmed.
Have an exit plan. Pride is not a strategy. Leaving is not losing.
Make it boring. Boring is kryptonite to the crackdown narrative.
Document the boring parts. The “before” matters more than the “clash.”
Build consequence outside the street. Officials, courts, local media, mutual aid, legal defense.
If the administration wants a situation they can rename “insurrection,” your job is to refuse the rename.
Don’t become the incident.
