The Mid-Terms
Elections aren’t a day. They’re a season. And the problem is that most of us treat them like a single episode instead of a whole Star Trek arc where the villain starts moving pieces five chapters before the big battle.
So, here’s my bridge log for the week: I keep seeing the early beats of executive interference. Not one neat, villain-monologue master plan. More like levers being tested. A raid here. A “we might need federal control” vibe there. “Security” language that sounds like it’s trying to become a pretext. In Trek terms, it’s the moment the captain tells Worf to run a security drill while everyone else pretends it’s a normal Tuesday.
This is me calling for that drill. In February. Not October.
Don’t picture election interference as a dramatic coup with music swelling. Picture an attempt to make voting feel unstable. Slow it down. Confuse it. Intimidate people at the edges. Create “incidents.” Then announce the system is broken and needs to be “handled” by the executive branch. That’s not fancy sci-fi. That’s just power doing what power does when it thinks nobody is watching.
So, what do we do?
I keep coming back to a simple Starfleet logic: you don’t wait for the first torpedo to start inventing protocols. You run a tabletop exercise. You assign stations. You practice the boring moves that keep one bad moment from cascading into a ship wide failure.
Think of it in three layers: harden, observe, respond.
The goal isn’t to predict every scenario. It’s to reduce the blast radius when someone tries to manufacture one. If your only role is doomscrolling, that’s basically volunteering to be the ship’s morale leak.
Phase 1: Now through early summer. Shields up.
Elections are run by humans, and understaffing is a vulnerability. If you want fewer places chaos can hide, you staff the ship.
This is the phase where you sign up to be a poll worker or election judge, help with voter registration, or recruit other people to do those jobs. It’s not glamorous. It’s high leverage.
And yes, indirect roles count. If you can do childcare so someone else can take a shift, that’s engineering. If you can drive someone to training, that’s ops. If you can help your local election office, get resources and public backing without turning it into a partisan food fight, that’s command work.
Phase 2: Summer through October. Sensors on.
This is where we stop treating misinformation and intimidation like random weather and start treating it like an active strategy.
Plug into legitimate election-protection networks. Learn the site rules. Learn the reporting channels. Practice documentation that doesn’t escalate. In Trek terms: you’re not firing phasers. You’re logging anomalies and keeping the bridge fed with clean data.
Also: practice staying calm on purpose. If intimidation shows up, the goal is to spike adrenaline and provoke conflict. Don’t give them that footage.
Phase 3: Election week. Damage control, not heroics.
If something ugly happens near voting sites, do not freelance.
Real systems don’t survive on speeches. They survive on protocols and teamwork. So if you see intimidation: document what you can legally document, notify election officials, and use established hotlines and channels. Don’t start a confrontation with someone in tactical gear because your pride wants a scene.
Here’s what I keep coming back to: the Enterprise doesn’t survive because it has the best speeches. It survives because it has a crew. People with stations. People who know what to do when the lights flicker.
That’s the February assignment. Pick a station.
Because the real danger isn’t only what might happen in November. It’s what we fail to build between now and then, while we tell ourselves we’ll get serious later. Later is how you wake up to red alert with the shields still down.
