The Most Important Step

In the past, the other person who writes for these newsletters has shared their interest in comic books. Lately, I’ve been coming back to my own nerdy hobby for inspiration: Fantasy novels.

Specifically, I’ve been thinking about a question posed by Brandon Sanderson in his Stormlight Archive series: What is the most important step a person can take?

When faced with the problems of our nation — ICE that still feels out of control, a war in Iran that keeps dragging on, and a President who appears to alternate between ill-timed naps, insane ranting, and demeaning anyone who even considers questioning him — Sanderson’s question feels pretty damn important.

What is the next step any of us can take? Individually, we can call representatives. We can protest. We can knock on doors for primary candidates in the hope of nominating people (**cough, Gonzales and Kiros**) who will actually stand up to Trump when they get to DC.* We can donate money to the ACLU and Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and even Greenpeace if they’re still around.

But none of these answer the question. Perhaps it helps to give some background on how the question is framed. The question (what is the most important step a person can take?) is posed to a deeply-flawed character named Dalinar, who has committed horrible atrocities in his past, for which he cannot possibly hope to atone. As is the way of Fantasy novels, he faces an enemy far stronger and more malicious than himself. If Dalinar fails to answer the question, the world will fall to darkness for several thousand years, or however long it usually takes evil overlords to die of a heart attack.

Then he discovers the answer: The next step. Always the next step.

When you ask yourself what is the most important thing you can be doing to help out right now, I want you to think about that. It is far worse to do nothing than to do something and discover later that there were better alternatives. Protesting can be your next step. Donating time or money to a political campaign can be your next step. Hell, talking with your friends and family can be a step too.

So, one more time, what’s the most important step a person can take?
